The Highway to Zionism

The building of the school housing the First Zionist Congress by the end of 1881.
The plot of the school was purchased in 1800 through an exchange of land between the leadership of the Focsani Jewish Community and the heads of the Mera and Pretshista Monasteries.
The school that began to function in 1866 was built by the banker Wilhelm Schleir – a distinguished member of the Community – who donated the necessary sums for the construction of the school and the purchase of the furniture.
Architect Davidescu designed the building, which was a successful combination of Gothic and Byzantine, with red brick decoration.
Today, the building exists only in pictures and our memories.
