Cilibi Moise- Vestitul din Tara Romanească

The Cilibi Moise- The Famous of the Romanian Country was an original and interesting figure in the field of literature, born in Focsani in 1812, as Froim Moise.

At a rather tender age he moves with his family to Bucharest. There, our hero becomes a peddler and travels all over the country. He dealt in haberdashery, noted proverbs, sayings, stories, jokes, and anecdotes and at the same time studied the characters of the people he met with. He worked on them, gave them a special “polish”, presented them in a more concise and attractive form and dictated them to people who know how to write in Romanian or directly to the typographers, as CILIBI MOISE knew how to write only in Hebrew.
In this way, along with the haberdashery, Cilibi Moise sold also his leaflets that made him known all over the country.

Among those who transcribed his “apropos” was also the great Caragiale, who admired him for the concision of his ideas. "The work” of Cilibi Moise was published in 13 -14 leaflets. George Calinescu has put him next to Anton Pann in his "History of Romanian Literature”.

Aged 58, Cilibi Moise passed away of typhus in 1870, and was buried at the “Filantropia” Jewish Cemetery in Bucharest.
